Chapter Seven

By the time they made it to the cabin, they were soaked to the skin. They dismounted in mud.

“Get inside,” Zach shouted above the din of pounding rain. “I’ll take care of the horses.”

“No. I’ll help.”

If rain hadn’t made opening his eyes difficult, Zach would have rolled them. Trust Nadine to not follow orders. On the other hand, between the two of them they got the job done twice as quickly.

With the horses dry, fed and tucked into the small shed expressly built for sheltering horses, they ran for the cabin.

Zach slammed the door behind them. He knelt by the hearth and put a dry match to the kindling already laid out. It took only a moment to get the fire going.

He stood and turned around just in time to see Nadine lean back and squeeze water out of her thick hair.

Her white T-shirt had gone transparent, outlining her full breasts and tight, hard nipples.

She shot him a look and evidently read the shock on his face. He stared at her chest. He couldn’t help himself.

She glanced down at herself and yelped. “Oh.” She crossed her arms over her breasts and Zach could have wept.

He spun away, remembering all his unformed teenage longings that had matured into pure, adult lust.

God, she was pretty.

The old armoire on the far side of the fireplace, cheap veneer peeling, held spare dry clothes. He yanked open the door. Pulling out a thick flannel shirt, he thrust it behind him without turning. “Put this on.”

“Thanks.” She took it from him and a second later said, “You can look now.”

He did. She was covered, but she’d put the flannel on over her wet shirt. “Not good enough, Nadine. You need to get out of the wet clothes before you put on the dry.” Surely she knew that?

By her sheepish expression, she did. “It’s just...”

“Just?”

“I won’t have any underwear on then. Everything got wet.”

As much as the thought of her without her bra and panties should have set his libido in flames, he tamped it down to concentrate on practical stuff.

“Take off everything and hang it in front of the fireplace.” If he sounded impatient, it was only because he fought an internal battle. “I’m going to step outside to call Rick and tell him where we are. Get changed while I’m gone. There are more clothes in the cupboard. Take what you need.”

Zach grabbed a couple of buckets and stepped back out into the rain, his soaked jeans hanging heavy and low on his hips.

He set the buckets out to collect rain water for washing and cleaning dishes.

Under the lip of the shed, he called Rick and assured him they were fine. When he returned to the cabin he found Nadine dressed in old jeans and the oversize flannel shirt. Her wet shirt and pants hung on the backs of a couple of ancient ladder-back chairs turned to face the fire.

“Good,” he said. “You’ll warm more quickly that way.”

From the armoire, he pulled out a shirt and old pants for himself.
